Clear as a Bell Marketing: February 2018

FIRST YEAR OF TRADING SO FAR…

We have entered a new year, but Clear as a Bell Marketing is still in its first year of trading and a lot has happened since my last update.

UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW

I had been working on a temporary part-time basis with the University of Glasgow in Dumfries to assist locally with marketing, events, PR and student recruitment.  When my contract was up for review in September, I had to make the difficult decision whether to accept an additional temporary contract offering part-time hours with the University of Glasgow, or to take the plunge into full-time self-employment.  With some degree of nervousness, I decided that to give Clear as a Bell Marketing the best chance of taking off, that I should dedicate my time to establishing the business.  I left the University of Glasgow (and my new business card !) in October and went solo…

ARMSTRONG WATSON NEW BUSINESS PRIZE

Around the same time in September, I was also notified that Clear as a Bell Marketing had been selected as the winner of the Armstrong Watson Lift Off promotion, which featured in DNG Media’s Business Voice magazine in the summer of 2017.  As the winner of the sole trader/new start up category, Accountants and Business Advisers Armstrong Watson agreed to provide free business mentoring support.  I am fortunate to have Douglas Russell, Partner in Armstrong Watson, as my mentor.  You may have seen the right up in Business Voice (Autumn 2017). Being new to self-employment it has been useful to have regular catch up meetings with Douglas and I particularly look forward to taking his advice on board when it comes to reviewing my accounts at the end of the financial year!

THE CRICHTON TRUST

I started a new freelance contract with The Crichton Trust at the end of September – initially for 2 days a week until the end of January to write a marketing plan for The Crichton.  After getting to know the organisation and given the huge amount of potential to promote the estate to many different sectors, this has turned into a much bigger task and so the contract was extended to work more closely with existing teams to support the delivery of existing marketing commitments as well as to manage the planning process for the longer term. The Crichton Trust Board recognises the need for the continued investment in marketing and so a further extension and increased commitment is due to be confirmed at the Board Meeting in February.

DUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY ARTS FESTIVAL

Work with Dumfries and Galloway Arts Festival continues on a project by project basis and has recently included support with writing two successful funding bids and project managing advertising and sponsorship opportunities for 2018.  From October 2017 to January 2018, we were liaising with local businesses re these advertising and sponsorship opportunities and collating artwork for the 2018 brochure which will be launched in March.

YOUTH BEATZ 2018

2018 started off well for Clear as a Bell Marketing after securing two new contracts with Dumfries & Galloway Council’s Youth Beatz team for 2018.  The first task is to promote marketing, advertising and sponsorship opportunities to local and national organisations.  Youth Beatz is already Scotland’s largest free youth music festival and it has been selected as one of only five signature events to mark Scotland’s Year of Young People in 2018.  My work will commence in February 2018. The second task will be to manage the hospitality zone for invited guests over the festival weekend (30th June and 1st July 2018).  If you or anyone you know is interested in getting involved in Youth Beatz 2018 then please do get in touch.

IN MY OWN TIME

It’s been a busy time managing the transition from employment into self-employment, but family time continues to be an important part of life outside of work and I also continue to contribute to the work of St George’s Church in Dumfries (as you might expect supporting events, communications and fundraising!). I am also a volunteer Business Mentor at Dumfries High School and continue to maintain my status as a Chartered Marketer with the Chartered Institute of Marketing through the annual submission of CPD records and reflections.
